Preparing for Frigid Temperatures

January 9, 2020 - As the deep freeze sets in for parts of the province, including all over Parkland School Division, families are reminded to take necessary precautions for inclement or severe weather.

When the safety of transporting bus students is at risk because of severe weather conditions, the Superintendent of Schools, in consultation with the Director of Transportation Services, may choose to suspend school bus services and in extreme cases, close schools. Procedures used in this process can be found in Administrative Procedure 750: Severe Weather.

Please note: Except in very special circumstances, PSD schools always remain open on school days.

Suspension of School Bus Services

Any of the following factors, or a combination of them, shall serve as an indicator that severe weather conditions exist:

  • Temperature, experienced with or without wind-chill, of -40°C or below;
  • Visibility of less than one kilometer;
  • Reports from bus drivers and/or counties or municipalities that rural roads are, or will soon be, impassable; and/or
  • Notification of severe weather through Alberta Emergency Alert.

The final decision to send a child to the bus stop or to school rests with parents, even though buses may be operational.

Transportation Services maintains a real-time list of the status of all PSD school buses. To view the status of your child's school bus (e.g. Operating, Delayed, Not Running), visit PSD's Bus Schedule page.

Dress Appropriately

Ensure that your student(s) are dressed properly for current or anticipated weather conditions. The temperatures on a school bus can drop dramatically in the event of mechanical problems.
Help keep students safe before they board the bus in the morning and after they disembark in the afternoon. It is recommended that a parent or caregiver drop students off and supervise at the bus stop in the morning, and be at the stop to take custody of your student(s) after they are dropped off in the afternoon. Daycare providers are required to meet students in their care at the bus stop.
Contact Transportation Services if your student will not be riding the bus in the afternoon, as the bus operator is otherwise held responsible for taking home every student he/she picks up in the morning.
